Welcome from the Director
Dear Prospective Student:
You are about to explore one of the most interesting and unique MBA programs in the world. We are the Heller MBA in Nonprofit Management, with a focus on Managing for a Social Mission. There are plenty of other MBAs in Nonprofit Management. What makes us so special? We are fully AACSB-accredited, and we are recognized by the Aspen Institute’s Beyond Grey Pinstripes as the #1 MBA in Boston for addressing social and environmental impact. But who are we really?
We are an MBA program that was born and grew up in the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University, a school whose mission is ‘Knowledge Advancing Social Justice.’ As we like to say – social justice is in our genes. Our sister programs at Heller are the PhD in Social Policy, the MPP in Social Policy, the MS in International Health Policy and Management and the MA in Sustainable International Development. Everybody you will meet here – whether they have come to get their MBA or another degree, whether they are from North America, South or Central America, Africa, Asia or Europe – is on a mission to make the world a better place.
In all likelihood, you are looking for an MBA that will give you the tools to lead organizations effectively. Perhaps you believe that these powerful tools are too often monopolized for purposes that do not contribute to the common good. You can be one of those change agents who learns to leverage the tools of an MBA to advance social justice.
Our graduates pursue many diverse paths when they leave. Nell Whitman is Director of Operations and Finance for the Saturday Academy. Brian Buell is Deputy Director of the Caleb Group, a developer of affordable housing. Joe Carbeau is a Financial Analyst for Public Partnerships and Marcia Neiburg is a Business Development Analyst for Partners Health Care. Alex Bauermeister is Corporate Partnerships consultant for the Environmental Defense Fund and Carrie Klugman consults with nonprofit organizations as an Associate at Bain Capital. Mary Otiato serves as Director of Operations for the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance, and Joanne Foster serves as Executive Director of HOPE. This is just a small sample of what our graduates do. When you graduate with a Heller MBA, you join a supportive network of change agents that you can rely on again and again as you carry out your life goals.
The Heller MBA has never been stronger, with a highly qualified and dynamic group of professors, a student support system led by Norma DeMattos, and a career services office led by Tom Broussard and Denise Riebman that will help to launch you onto a successful path after graduation. The students we have admitted over the past several years are among the most academically qualified students ever admitted to this program. We would love to include you!
Please visit our website, and then, even better, come visit us. We will make you feel right at home, and will show you a typical day in the Heller community – including conversations with fellow students, faculty and staff and the intense, often exhilarating, environment of our classes.
I look forward to meeting you!

The Heller MBA
MANAGING FOR A SOCIAL MISSION
The Heller MBA prepares early- to mid-career professionals to effectively manage organizations with a social mission, whether in the non-profit, for-profit, or public sector. Heller's unique MBA provides students with the training to address the distinctive management issues facing organizations whose mission is to help underserved and vulnerable populations, or to improve social and environmental outcomes more broadly.
If your goal is to lead an organization with a social mission, the Heller MBA is for you. Its 16-month structure condenses two years of curriculum into four consecutive, intense semesters of learning, ideal for people who want to return to work quickly and put their new skills into action.
Heller MBA students learn with others who share their values and interests in pursuing a social mission. At Heller, the culture of the classroom provides a participatory, supportive environment for student learning. The goal is to enable students to share the insights and experience they bring to the program and help them to achieve their highest performance while providing them with models for leading effective organizations.
The Heller MBA trains students to be leaders and decision-makers who can find resources and use them effectively to achieve social goals. Managers with a Heller MBA bring solid management tools, analytic skills and personal commitment to bear on answering some of today's most pressing social problems.
The Heller MBA is AACSB accredited, and is jointly delivered by the Heller School for Social Policy and Management and the International Business School of Brandeis University.
SHARING COMMITMENT
Students at the Heller School share a personal commitment to social values, as well as a passion for pursuing a social mission.
You'll find students from a multitude of backgrounds. Perhaps you've worked in the non-profit sector or in health and human services and have decided to expand your effectiveness by obtaining a Heller MBA. Maybe you've worked in the for-profit sector and want to learn how to leverage your talents toward affecting social outcomes in a non-profit organization. Or perhaps you want to work in a for-profit corporation that is seeking to have a positive social or environmental impact.
Whatever your background, we look for your commitment to bettering human well-being by developing the leadership and technical skills required by professionals in today's competitive non-profit, for profit, and public sector organizations.
Many Heller MBA students join the Brandeis University chapter of Net Impact, a student organization dedicated to using the power of business to make a positive net social, economic, and environmental impact.
